Games and literature
The games presented (with the exception of our own game) are not teaching or therapy materials. Only some of them are explicitly games for children, others can be played well with children and young people if they are used carefully, but also contain content that is not suitable for children. Which games are suitable for which use must be decided individually based on the needs of the players. Unfortunately, even the best game can be used inappropriately without taking the needs into account. EduTale does not gain any financial benefits or interests from this information and links. Abenteuer im Märchenwald
Our game for use in therapy and education:
The game is tailored to the needs of educational and therapeutic settings and includes tasks focused on collaborative problem-solving and (written) language. There is no need to remove inappropriate content, yet a child-friendly X-card is included as a safety mechanism. The adventure is thoroughly prepared, so that even newcomers and children can take on the role of game master, as long as they are reasonably confident readers.
The box also contains information for teachers or therapeutic professionals to support reflection on the game, as well as information cards for parents.
Monsterjagd!
Monsterjagd is a game specifically developed for children. Its mechanics are designed to help overcome fear and anxiety. Players take on the role of young investigators exploring a familiar environment that is, however, inhabited by monsters—monsters that aren’t necessarily truly dangerous and always have a weakness or problem of their own.
Through playful engagement, children practice facing what frightens them, learning more about it until the “monster” is no longer a threat. To accommodate different needs, the game includes character sheets with varying levels of complexity.
So nicht, Schurke!
So nicht, Schurke! was specifically developed for children. The world is diverse and open, allowing kids to play just about anything or anyone they want to imagine. Character sheets are available at different levels of complexity. There are also cards that help generate quests, challenges, and creatures—or can be used to build a dungeon.
It’s a game where creativity and cooperation can be explored and practiced in a playful way.
Tails of Equestria - das Erzählspiel
In this game, players dive into the world of My Little Pony. But you don’t just have to play ponies—you can also take on the roles of many other creatures like dragons or griffons.
Equestria is a colorful fantasy world filled with sparkling gemstones, lively parties, adorable birds and bunnies—but also with shadowy underworlds and eerie, dark forests. Especially for children who are already familiar with this world, it makes getting started and staying motivated much easier.
The simple rules and cooperative mechanics also make it a worthwhile experience for newcomers exploring the world of ponies for the first time.
Unfortunately, the core rulebook is currently out of print.
Little Wizards
A role-playing game developed specifically for children, set in a world of young wizards and their magical companions. It features various character sheets and a child-friendly setting.
Mausritter
Mausritter is a rules-light role-playing game. It was not specifically developed for children, so it's important to carefully consider how to soften certain rules to avoid tears—especially since the tiny mice characters are quite fragile and can die unexpectedly.
With the right precautions, however, the mouse’s-eye view of the world—whether in a hedgerow or a garden plot—can be a charming and accessible introduction to role-playing games, even for younger players.
Beyond the Wall und andere Abenteuer
Beyond the Wall is a classic fantasy role-playing game. While it isn’t specifically aimed at children, its relatively simple rules and open, fantastical world—drawing inspiration from familiar myths and fairy tales—make it a great entry point for teenagers and, with minimal adjustments, also suitable for children.
The collaborative village creation is particularly well-suited for team-building activities.
Die Schwarze Katze
In this game, you play as cats (or other animals) in Aventuria, the world of The Dark Eye (DSA). The rules are lighter than in the core DSA system, but still quite complex for younger children.
The DSK Compendium includes simplified storytelling rules and guidance for playing with children, which can also be adapted for use with The Dark Eye.
Der Eine Ring
The starter box of The One Ring is set in the Shire, some time after Bilbo has returned from his journey with the Ring. Players take on the roles of Hobbits from the well-known families.
While the game is not specifically designed for children or teenagers, it remains true to the tone of the original children's book, expands upon it lovingly, and offers a great entry point into role-playing games for families with older children—especially if the story has already been read. The game is more aligned with the world of the book than with that of the films.
Roll Inclusive
Essays on diversity and representation in role-playing games:
How can we foster respectful interaction with one another and with other cultures? How can a gaming group become a safe space for everyone? What tools can help create accessibility and inclusion?
This book offers a wide range of perspectives and practical guidance for addressing many of the challenges that can still arise at the gaming table today.
Abenteuer gestalten
The book offers comprehensive explanations of various approaches to creating pen-and-paper adventures across different genres. It also provides insights into the historical development of role-playing games.
